HSV legend Hermann Rieger

Hermann Josef Rieger (born October 2, 1941 in Mittenwald ; † February 18, 2014 in Hanover ) was a German DSV ski trainer and well-known physiotherapist at Hamburger SV . His 26 years as a masseur at HSV made him a club idol and “cult masseur”. Today a bronze statue in front of the north-east entrance of the Volksparkstadion commemorates Rieger.

Life

The trained retail salesman initially worked as a ski instructor, from 1971 to 1976 he was a ski trainer for the German Ski Association. During this time he trained as a physiotherapist with Hans-Jürgen Montag , who later became the physiotherapist of the German national soccer team . In this role he worked for FC Bayern Munich in 1977/78 . In 1978 Manfred Kaltz brokered his move to HSV , where he only ended his engagement after 26 years - due to the first of many cancer cases from 2004 onwards. The HSV organized a farewell game in his honor, an extremely rare honor for a club member who is not a player.

On July 19, 2005, the path near his parents' house in Mittenwald was renamed "Hermann-Rieger-Weg".

In November 2006, Hermann Rieger agreed to support the “HSV fans help sick children” campaign as a prominent sponsor. The association HSV fans help children e. V. collects money and donations in kind for the children's ward of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Hamburg. Since May 2009 he has also supported the charity campaign Kicken mit Herz as a trainer and physiotherapist for the medical team “Placebo Kickers Hamburg”, which competes every year in May against a selection of celebrities from the “Hamburg Allstars” in favor of the children's heart ward at Eppendorf University Hospital.

Hermann Rieger enjoys a cult status among HSV supporters due to his honest and cheerful manner and his long work for HSV, which otherwise only few players achieve (battle cry from bad times: you can all go except Hermann ). If a player was injured, “Hermann, Hermann” would be heard through the Volksparkstadion when Rieger ran onto the field. A fan club (Hermann's loyal squad) and the HSV mascot Hermann are named after him. Ernst Happel gave him the nickname "Carved" . In addition, on September 29, 2012, Rieger was elected as a masseur in the 125-year-old team as part of the club's anniversary.

At the Hamburg sports gala on February 17, 2014, one day before his death, Rieger received the honorary award. Bernd Wehmeyer , HSV team manager Jürgen Ahlert and Horst Hrubesch accepted the award for him.

Rieger had been widowed since 2010 and lived in Alfstedt until his death . In 2012 he joined the CDU .

Hermann Rieger died on February 18, 2014 at the age of 72 after a long period of serious cancer in the hospital of the Hannover Medical School . In honor of Hermann Rieger, the flags at the Volksparkstadion were raised to half-mast . Before the Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund on February 22, 2014, there was a minute's silence and the HSV players competed with black ribbon . In addition, the day after Rieger's death, the HSV fans organized a funeral march from the Stellingen S-Bahn station to the arena, in which around 1000 fans took part, and a choreography when the teams came in against BVB, in which the entire north stand was Portrait of Rieger with his trademark with the signature Forever our best man, whom no one can ever replace. Rest in peace, Hermann! was seen. The funeral service took place on March 2, 2014 in the Volksparkstadion. On the first day of his death, a bronze statue of Rieger was inaugurated in front of the north-east entrance of the Volksparkstadion.
