Severe weather in southern Europe in January and February 2014

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The storm in southern Europe covered Italy , Austria , Switzerland and the Balkans with heavy snow and freezing rain . The trigger for this storm is the low Mayla , which worked in the Mediterranean.

Austria

In Austria, the Tauern motorway had to be closed at times . The Tauernbahn was also only in operation with replacement rail services. The Lesach Valley , the Nassfeld , Bad Bleiberg and Zell-Pfarre regions were cut off from the outside world . In south-eastern Styria, the Radkersburger Bahn line between Spielfeld and Bad Radkersburg had to be closed due to the freezing rain and the risk of landslides and was out of service for several weeks due to the clearing work.

In mid-February, large amounts of fresh snow in Carinthia and Styria led to major damage, where the power supply but also traffic was affected.

Italy

A landslide has been reported in Italy near Bergamo . Numerous people were then placed in emergency shelters. The Tiber had reached high water due to the constant rainfall. Numerous schools in Rome have been closed. In South Tyrol it snowed more than 400 percent of the average amount of snow.

Serbia

In Serbia, snow drifts reached a snow depth of up to six meters, which was caused by the Kosava wind . 400 people got stuck with their vehicles in the snow and were freed with the help of tanks or helicopters .

Slovenia

In Slovenia there was freezing rain , which in many regions led to a layer of ice up to five centimeters thick. Numerous communities were cut off from the outside world. 90,000 people in Slovenia were without electricity, among other things because several power poles collapsed under the ice. 500 tons of steel had to be removed in this context. The Slovenian government applied for international aid from the neighboring countries of Italy and Croatia and from the EU Commission . Austria sent the disaster relief service of several federal states with 113 fire brigade members with 65 vehicles and 27  emergency power generators to the country. Germany sent THW helpers from Hesse and Bonn to Slovenia, the Czech Republic sent six professional firefighters from Ostrava . 500,000 hectares of forest area, i.e. 42 percent of the forest area in Slovenia, were covered with ice. The damage is estimated at 3.5 million cubic meters of wood, which corresponds to the regular annual logs in Slovenia. In the city of Postojna , which was particularly hard hit, a crisis center was set up where people could find refuge from the cold. The Postojna hospital in particular was a challenge for the helpers.

Switzerland

In the canton of Ticino , more than half a meter of fresh snow fell within 24 hours on February 2.

The Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn closed the car train in Furka and Oberalp and the route between Realp and Hospental .
