Joseph Befe Ateba

Joseph Befe Ateba (born April 25, 1962 in Nkoabe / Yaoundé , Cameroon ; † June 4, 2014 in Pretoria , South Africa ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and the first bishop of the newly established Kribi diocese in Cameroon.

Life

Joseph Befe Ateba studied philosophy and theology at the major seminary Immaculée Conception di Nkolbison in Cameroon Nkolbison . He graduated from the Media Service Center in Kaduna , Nigeria , with a degree in communication science and a degree from the high school for communication science and technology in Yaoundé. He was ordained a priest on June 20, 1987 and served in the Archdiocese of Yaoundé .

From 1987 to 1989 he was vicar of the cathedral, 1989 to 1991 founding pastor of the Kondengui parish and media officer of his diocese. From 1991 to 1994 he studied journalism at the Ecole Supérieure des Sciences et Techniques de l'Information et de Communication (ESSTIC) in Yaoundé. From 1994 to 1997 he was editor-in-chief of the newspaper Nleb-ensemble , from 1995 to 1997 secretary of the episcopal media commission, regional secretary of the episcopal media commission, teacher of information technology at the Saint Cyprien seminary in Ngoya, Cameroon and from 1997 to 1998 lecturer at the Ste Thérèse major seminary .

From 2001 to 2006 he was consultor of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and from 1998 to 2003 he headed the press office of the Symposium of the Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SCEAM). From 2004 to 2005 he was Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Yaoundé and since 2005 Vicar General .

On June 19, 2008 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed first bishop of the diocese of Kribi, established on the same date. On October 4, 2008, he received by the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Archbishop Robert Sarah , the episcopal ordination . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Yaoundé, Simon-Victor Tonyé Bakot , and the Bishop of Ebolowa , Jean Mbarga .

The President of the Republic of Cameroon, Paul Biya , installed him on July 8, 2011 as President of the National Council for Communication in Cameroon.

Ateba died on June 4, 2014 after a long illness in a hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.
