Small island developing countries
Small Iceland Developing States ( SIDS , German Small Island Developing States , or on small islands situated developing countries ) are for a definition of the United Nations , a group of currently 39 small island states and flat coastal littoral states in Africa , the Caribbean and Oceania , which share a similar socio-economic situation and are exposed to the same dangers. Some of these states formed the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in 1990 .
Explanations
These states are ecologically very sensitive and are repeatedly thrown back in their development by environmental disasters, for example. In addition, island states are particularly affected by global warming . According to experts, the temperature will rise by an average of 3 ° C over the next 100 years, which would mean a rise in sea level of 65 cm. At such a level, large and important parts of the national territory of countries such as the Maldives , Kiribati , Tuvalu , Micronesia and Tonga would be flooded. Another consequence of climate changes would be an increase in the intensity of storms such as monsoons or tropical cyclones , which in the worst case would wipe out entire harvests and livelihoods. These mini-states find it difficult from the start to build up an economic industry with their modest area and population, which in turn makes most of them developing countries . Only a few countries, such as Mauritius , manage to create an almost intact economy through economic specialization, but even in this case things are now going downhill again.
Together with the Developing Countries Without Access to the Sea (LLDC) and the Least Developed Countries (LDC), the SIDSs have been represented by a High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing Countries (OHRLLS) since 2001 . Based on a resolution of the UN General Assembly , this office was set up at the headquarters of the world organization in New York to help coordinate the various programs of action for these groups of countries.
