location

Frohburg train station is in the north of Frohburg in the Saxon district of Leipzig .

history

Frohburg station was opened on April 8, 1872 with the Neukieritzsch – Chemnitz line. Since the mid-1890s, the station, which was still relatively insignificant at the time, was expanded. After the construction of the branch line Frohburg – Kohren was approved in spring 1896, the Frohburg – Kohren-Sahlis line opened on April 26, 1906. The new section of the station for the line to Kohren was built south of the existing facilities.

In addition to the station building, Frohburg station received a goods shed, locomotive handling systems, two signal boxes and a farm building. The reception building, which consists of a central building and two two-and-a-half-storey side wings, has been owned by the city of Frohburg since 2012. With the decision of the city council on September 5, 2019, she sold it on to the investor Hubert Herr. If he does not renovate the station building within five years, it will revert to the city.

With the cessation of rail traffic on the line to Kohren-Sahlis in 1967, the importance of the station declined again. The dismantled station now has only two tracks, of which the main platform has been made barrier-free. Since then it has been 145 meters long and 55 centimeters high . Since the intermediate platform that is still in place is not required for regular operations, it no longer has regular access. A short remnant of the branch line to Kohren-Sahlis is still used as a siding.

The section from Borna via Frohburg to Geithain was electrified in the summer of 2010, so that the MRB 2/70 local transport line, which formerly ran from Leipzig via Borna to Geithain , opened the Leipzig City Tunnel, which can only be driven electrically, in December 2013 as S-Bahn line S4 could be included in the network of the S-Bahn Central Germany . From December 15, 2013, line S4 of the new network of S-Bahn Central Germany used the section between Neukieritzsch via Frohburg to Geithain, from December 13, 2015 the S3, since December 13, 2015 it has been the S6.
