Breitenborn was first mentioned in 1350 as "in Breitenburne". Regarding the manorial lordship, in 1548, Breitenborn was partly subject to the council of Rochlitz, the parish of Breitenborn and as an official village partly or from 1764 to 1856 completely to the electoral and royal Saxon office of Rochlitz . There is evidence that Breitenborn has had a church since the 16th century. It belongs to the parish of Wechselburg . The offices were dissolved during the administrative reforms carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony in the 19th century . As a result, Breitenborn came under the administration of the Rochlitz court office in 1856 and in 1875 under the newly established Rochlitz administration .

On July 1, 1950, Wittgendorf was incorporated into Breitenborn. As a result of the second district reform in the GDR in 1952, the municipality of Breitenborn was incorporated into the Geithain district in the Leipzig district, which was continued as the Saxon district of Geithain from 1990 onwards . On August 1, 1994, it was reclassified to the newly formed Mittweida district , which was added to the Central Saxony district in 2008. With the incorporation of the municipality of Breitenborn into Rochlitz, Breitenborn and Wittgendorf became districts of Rochlitz on January 1, 1995.
