geography
location
The Geithain district was on the southern edge of the Leipzig lowland bay .
Neighboring areas
The district of Geithain bordered in a clockwise direction in the northwest on the districts of Borna , Grimma , Rochlitz and Altenburg .
Natural space
The Geithain district was in the Saxon mountain and hill country. It extended from the Leipzig lowland bay in the northwest into the central Saxon loess loam area. Accordingly, the land rose gradually to the south from about 170 m in height near Bad Lausick to 260 m. Only about 5% of the district area was forested. Larger forests were Stöckigt and Streitwald between Frohburg and Kohren-Sahlis and the Schildholz southwest of Bad Lausick. Most of the Kohrener Land conservation area was located within the district area.
history
The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states of the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the GDR and the five remaining states . On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former five countries. The Geithain district was formed from the Borna and Rochlitz districts and assigned to the Leipzig district , the town of Geithain became the seat of the district .
The following 37 municipalities were initially part of the Geithain district:
- 30 municipalities from the Borna district :
- Altmörbitz , Bad Lausick , Benndorf , Buchheim , Dolsenhain , Ebersbach , Elbisbach , Eschefeld , Flößberg , Frauendorf , Frauenhain, Frohburg , Geithain , Gnandstein , Greifenhain , Hopfgarten , Kohren-Sahlis , Narsdorf , Nauen grove , Nenkersdorf , Neukirchen , Lower Gräfenhain , Upper Pickenhain , Ossa , Prießnitz , Roda , Streitwald , Syhra , Tautenhain and Wickershain .
- 7 municipalities from the Rochlitz district :
- Breitenborn , Dölitzsch , Jahnshain , Langenleuba-Oberhain , Obergräfenhain , Rathendorf and Wernsdorf .
As a result of reclassifications across district boundaries and changes in the municipal area, the number of municipalities fell to 21 by the time the district was dissolved at the end of July 1994:
