The first documented form of place names dates from 1266 as Merkwiz . Like Hohenheida and Gottscheina, Merkwitz had been one of the three old university villages since 1438 . For almost 400 years, the University of Leipzig received income from the village as the manor. August Schumann mentions Merkwitz in 1819 in the State, Post and Newspaper Lexicon of Saxony concerning a. a .:

“It has 22 houses, 110 inhabitants, 8 ¼ magazine hooves, a side of Leipzig, and is parish in Hohenheida. Among the houses are 8 goods, 1 inn and a small tavern. "

Merkwitz was until 1856 in the electoral or royal Saxon district office of Leipzig . From 1856 the place belonged to the Taucha court office and from 1875 to the Leipzig District Administration . In 1973 Seegeritz was incorporated into the then independent municipality of Merkwitz, which had been in the northeast of what was then the Leipzig-Land district in the Leipzig district since 1952 . On July 1, 1992, Merkwitz and Seegeritz were incorporated into Taucha.
