history

Church origin
Church origin 2017

As early as 1225 the place was known as Ourspringen , probably named after the source area of the Lungwitzbach, which is at its origin.

Although the Waldhufendorf was located in the catchment area of the Lugau-Oelsnitzer coal mining area, it did not participate in economic growth in the 19th century, as did the more south-westerly neighboring villages due to coal mining. A test drill to a depth of 200 m by the coal company of the large Erzgebirge basin in 1846/47 was unsuccessful. The Wüstenbrand – Lugau coal railway has been running through the local area since 1858, but Ursprung did not have its own railway station until 1885 with the Ursprung stop .

There is evidence of an evangelical pastor as early as the 16th century. The old, almost 250-year-old church building burned to the ground on October 23, 1974. Only a late Gothic carved altar by Peter Breuer could be saved from the sacristy . The reconstruction dragged on well into the 1980s.

On January 1, 1999, the place with its 612 inhabitants (as of December 31, 1998) was incorporated into Erlbach-Kirchberg . With the incorporation of the Erlbach-Kirchberg community into the city of Lugau, Ursprung became a district of Lugau on January 1, 2013.
