geography

Local division

Erlbach-Kirchberg consists of the two districts Erlbach and Kirchberg, which used to be independent villages.

history

Erlbach was founded as a Waldhufendorf by the settlement of Franconian farmers in the 12th century . The place was first mentioned in a document in 1486. The settlement was later separated by a donation from the Lords of Waldenburg to the Grünhain monastery and only reunited in 1957. Most of the forced laborers and hunting drivers from Stollberg lived in the village . The main branches of business were charcoal burning, peat cutting and ore washing. Two mills were still working until 1930.

On January 1, 1999, Ursprung was incorporated. Since the incorporation of the Erlbach-Kirchberg community into Lugau on January 1, 2013, the two Lugau districts of Erlbach-Kirchberg and Ursprung have formed a separate village within the urban area.

Memorials

In the Erlbach district cemetery , a memorial commemorates six unknown concentration camp prisoners on a death march from Auschwitz , who were murdered by SS men in March 1945 .
