The park of the victims of fascism in Chemnitz is located southeast of the city center along Zschopauer Strasse ( Bundesstrasse 174 ). It covers the area of the former Johannisfriedhof.

history

The former Johannisfriedhof was located southeast of the Johanniskirche in today's city center. It was the main cemetery in Chemnitz since the 16th century. With the industrial revolution, the church cemeteries reached their capacity limits. That is why the municipal cemetery was finally laid out on Reichenhainer Straße from 1871 .

Most of the graves in the former Johannisfriedhof were leveled after the cemetery was closed at the beginning of the 20th century.

On September 14, 1952, a memorial by Hanns Diettrich was inaugurated on the site in memory of the victims of the National Socialist regime.

Since 1975 the area of the former cemetery has been called the Park of the Victims of Fascism. However, there are still some graves in the park today. From the Zschopauer Straße you can see the memorial grave of Franz Xaver Rewitzer . Further east in the park is the grave of Johann Ambrosius Weigand, a pioneer for the gymnastics movement and the fire brigade in Chemnitz. The graves of fallen German and French soldiers in the Franco-Prussian War , the so-called "French graves ", have been restored.
