history

Origin and name

Soest and its districts
Ostönnen, the Sankt Andreas Church

Ostönnen (pronounced: Os-tönnen ) goes back historically with the neighboring Werler district Westönnen (including Mawicke) to a settlement on Hellweg , which was first mentioned in 973 as " tiunni ". The oldest mention of the actual "Ostönnen" dates from the year 1169. As a settlement on the northern edge of the source of the Haarstrang , Ostönnen lies in the middle of an area with an ancient settlement tradition : Finds date from the time of the band ceramics and the Bronze Age between 1800 and 800 BC. Chr.

middle Ages

Originally the medieval Ostönnen belonged to the Free County of Rüdenberg , a fief first of the Counts of Werl-Arnsberg , then the Archbishops of Cologne as lords of the Duchy of Westphalia . In 1328 the Free County of Rüdenberg with Ostönnen was sold by Gottfried von Rüdenberg to the city of Soest with the approval of Archbishop Heinrich von Virneburg , with whom it shared its historical fate in the further course of history. After Soest became independent in the Soest feud in 1449, Ostönnen became Protestant in 1585 - the territorial border between Ostönnen and Westönnen thus became a denominational border .

Modern times

On July 1, 1969, Ostönnen was incorporated into Soest by the Soest / Beckum law .

Culture and sights

Church and organ

The completely Romanesque St. Andrew's Church with its distinctive multi-windowed tower became widely known at the beginning of the millennium (2002/2003), as scientific studies had established that the oldest recordable organ in the world (parts from the 15th century).

In addition to the village of Ostönnen, the Protestant St. Andreas parish of Ostönnen also includes the districts of Ostönner Linde, Am Drusenbrink, Höhberg and the towns of Röllingsen and Sieveringen, which are not part of the Soest district of Ostönnen, the latter not even belonging to the city of Soest, but to the municipality of Ense.

The ecclesiastical catchment area comprises around 1,500 inhabitants, of whom around 800 are constantly members of the Protestant parish.

Flood disaster

In 1968 there was a flood disaster as a result of heavy rains on the Haar. Four people were killed and several houses were completely destroyed.

Transport and transport infrastructure

The former federal highway B1 runs through the town in an east-west direction. The status as a federal highway was revoked because of the parallelism to the federal motorway A44, which affects the municipality in the south. In terms of traffic, the road is still as important as a federal road. It is also used as a diversion to the A44.

In the middle of the village there is a gas station with LPG and a washing system, as well as the usual shop.

At the Ostönnen, Kleinbahnhof stop (reminiscent of the small train that used to run there), three bus lines meet, the C5 to Soest, R54 to Neheim (Arnsberg) and R47 to Werl, which continues from there as the R41 towards Hamm. There are hourly connections to Soest, Arnsberg and via Werl to Hamm.

The Dortmund-Paderborn rail link runs in the north, also in an east-west direction, with a stop in Soest. The Ostönnen station was unfortunately abandoned as a stop. However, there are efforts to revive this. Although the train station is relatively far from the town center, it would also be attractive for passengers from the Schwefe, Merklingsen and Enkesen areas, especially for Park & Ride and Bike & Ride.

economy

In a village with a little over a thousand inhabitants, the number of jobs directly in the village is manageable. There are still some full-time farmers. The parish of St. Andreas employs a pastor (partially) and a parish secretary on a part-time basis. All other activities are carried out on a voluntary basis.

Hellweg Hall

The Hellweg Hall can be seen as a special feature. This building, which was mainly erected on a voluntary basis, fell to the city of Soest after it was incorporated. The hall is the largest event building in the city after the city hall in Soest. Therefore not only events of the village, but also national events take place there, e.g. B. the synod of the church district.

The hall is looked after on site by an indoor club, which is recruited from the other local clubs. The hall association recruits volunteers who take care of the maintenance of the hall. In addition to the main room with two counters and a stage, there are also various side rooms, e.g. T. are rented permanently. All other rooms can be rented as required. The lighting and sound technology are state-of-the-art, and all requirements for safety and fire protection are met or even exceeded.
