Count Johann of Freiburg and Neuchâtel

John of Freiburg - in the Romandie as Jean de Friborg known - (* 26. May 1396 in Neuchatel ; † 19th February 1458 ibid) was titular Count of Freiburg , Count of Neuchâtel and Lord of Badenweiler .

Life

Johann served at the court of the Duke of Burgundy Johann Ohnefurcht and then also with his son Philip the Good , where he also represented the interests of Bern at the Burgundian court . After the death of his father, Johann became Count of Neuchâtel in 1424, although there were no conflicts with the Counts of Chalon because of the succession. But Johann recognized the feudal sovereignty of the Counts of Chalon, as evidenced by a certificate of homage from 1453.

In 1440 he was appointed Marshal of Burgundy , but resigned from this office in 1443. In 1442 he attended a meeting between Philip the Good and the German King Friedrich III. part. On September 8, 1444, Johann gave his nephews Rudolf IV and Hugo von Hachberg-Sausenberg his dominion in Badenweiler and Baden Castle . In 1455 he renewed the city charter of Neuchâtel .

Origins, marriages and descendants

He was the only son of Conrad III. von Freiburg from the family of the Counts of Freiburg and Maria von Vergy - a sister of Antoine de Vergy .

Around 1416, Johann married Marie († April 27, 1465) the daughter of his father's fief, Johann (Jean) III. from the family of the Counts of Chalon-Arlay . He had a son and two daughters with her, but they all died in childhood:

  • Jean (* 1426)
  • Catherine (* 1428)
  • Jeanne (* 1429)

After Johann's death, Marie de Chalon received the dominions of Cerlier , Vercel and Vuillafans . She left Neuchâtel on May 1, 1458 and settled in Vercel.

Johann's aunt Anna was with Margrave Rudolf III. von Hachberg-Sausenberg , whose grandson, Rudolf IV. inherited the remaining property of the Counts of Freiburg after Johann's death.
