Oraniensteiner
Oraniensteiner is a white wine variety . It is a cross between Riesling and Silvaner , which was carried out at the Geisenheim research institute in the Rheingau in 1985. The Osteiner and Rieslaner grape varieties were also created from crosses by the same parents .
Oraniensteiner produces wines with strong acidity (→ acidity (wine) ) and citrus aromas . It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
The importance of the vine can be classified as low overall. In Germany it has no cultivar approval and has since been withdrawn from the approval process. Small stocks are known in Canada and in the US Altus AVA wine region . The Oranienstein Castle was the inspiration for the name .
