Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen (born February 19, 1780 in Angermünde- Schmiedeberg in the Uckermark , † June 11, 1856 in Berlin ) was a German specialist in German .

origin

His parents were the landowner on Schmiedeberg Leopold von der Hagen (1747–1814) and the maid from Schmiedeberg Dorothea Elisabeth Bischof (1749–1842), his grandparents Leopold von der Hagen auf Schmiedeberg and Ketzür and Sophie Friederike von Greiffenberg .

Life

Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen was one of the first representatives of academic German studies and was one of the first professors of this subject. His work lost influence in the course of the 'Science War' with the Brothers Grimm and due to competition with Karl Lachmann .

Hagen became the first associate professor for old German literature in Berlin in 1810, and full professor in Breslau in 1818 . In 1824 he returned to Berlin University as a full professor . In 1841 he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences . Since 1851 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

He is known for his text editions of Middle High German and Persian-Arabic poems. This included the first translation of the Nibelungenlied into New High German in 1807 and its publication in modernized Middle High German in 1810, as well as the publication of Thousand and One Nights . His comprehensive edition of Middle High German poetry is still the only edition of individual poets in individual cases. Hagen maintained scientific contacts with Ludwig Tieck , the Brothers Grimm , Achim von Arnim , Clemens Brentano and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .

Hagen was the editor of Germania , the yearbook of the Berlin Society for the German Language and Antiquity .

He married Maria Reynack (1776-1858) from Brussels. The marriage remained childless.
