Heinrich Max Alexander Reifferscheid (born June 2, 1847 in Bonn , † February 9, 1909 in Greifswald ) was a German literary scholar and Germanist .

Alexander Reifferscheid was a brother of the professor of classical philology August Reifferscheid , who in 1868 accepted the call as full professor at the Silesian Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Breslau. In 1869 August married Anna Maria Simrock (1846–1905), daughter of the poet and philologist Professor Karl Joseph Simrock (1802–1876) and his wife Gertrude Antoinette Ostler (1804–1872) in Bonn . August's son and Alexander's nephew was the painter Heinrich Reifferscheid .

Alexander was a private lecturer at the University of Bonn from 1873 to 1876 . He was professor at the University of Greifswald from 1876/7 to 1904, initially as an associate professor and later as a full professor. Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff was only able to explain his appointment to Greifswald because of his good relations with the Prussian minister Adalbert Falk in Berlin . His main field of work was the history of literature, with an emphasis on the 17th century. He was the editor of several literary and religious works. From 1890 to 1891 Reifferscheid was rector of the University of Greifswald. Both were friends with contemporary writers.

His son Heinrich Reifferscheid became known as an art historian and museologist in Schwerin and was most recently museum and library director in Neustrelitz .
