Paul Dräger (born December 20, 1942 in Amt Neuhaus ) is a German classical philologist , translator and historian of science .

Life

Paul Dräger studied Classical Philology, History, Slavic and Indo-European Studies from 1963 to 1968 at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . After the two state examinations (1968/1969) he worked as a grammar school teacher (1968–2000) and as a lecturer for classical philology at the University of Trier (1981–1989, 1994–1997).

In 1990, Dräger received his doctorate from the University of Trier with the dissertation Argo pasimelousa: The Argonaut myth in Greek and Roman literature . In the 2001/02 winter semester he presented The Argonautica of Apollonios Rhodios: The Second Anger Epos of Greek Literature (Munich 2001) as a habilitation thesis in Faculty II of the University of Trier .

Since his retirement (2000) he has worked as a freelance author, translator, reviewer, editor (Reclam, Patmos) and science historian. In 2007/2008 he was a lecturer in ancient history at Saarland University , and from 2008 to 2010 freelance for the daily newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund .

His research interests include the Greek and Roman epic poetry, ancient mythology, archaic Greek poetry (especially Pindar ), Hellenistic ( Apollonios of Rhodes ), Augustan ( Virgil ), Flavian ( Valerius Flaccus ) and late ancient poetry ( Ausonius ) as well as Middle Latin literature ( Saints - Viten ). In terms of the history of science, Dräger is particularly concerned with the researchers Theodor Mommsen and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff .
