Live and act

Claude Pascal, who received his first piano lessons at the age of five, entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of ten . Following a recommendation by its director Henri Rabaud , the conductor Walter Straram engaged him in 1933 for the role of Yniold in a performance of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées . Through the performance, the head of the Columbia label, Georges Truc, became aware of him, who made several recordings with him, including Noël des enfants qui n'ont plus de maison by Debussy and J'ai fait un trou à ma culotte by Gabriel Grovlez after one Text by Tristan Klingsor with Joseph Benvenuti at the piano and together with the mezzo-soprano Suzanne Feyrou Jacky et Mado , a musical story by Robert de Fragny . A recording of Schubert's Erlkönig was made under the direction of Eugène Bigot , in which Georges Thill sang the Erlkönig, Henri Etcheverry the father and Pascal the child.

In addition to studying with Jean and Noël Gallon (harmony, counterpoint and fugue), Louis Laloy (music history) and Henri Busser (composition), Pascal took piano lessons with Yves Nat at the end of the 1930s and studied conducting with Charles Munch , Roger Désormière and Louis Fourestier . In 1945 he won the Premier Grand Prix de Rome with the cantata La Farce du contrebandier (after Guy de Téramond ) .

After his return from the stay at the Villa Medici in Rome (1946–1949) associated with the award, Pascal worked for a short time as choirmaster at the Opéra-Comique before becoming professor at the Paris Conservatory in 1952. He held this position until his retirement in 1987.

In addition, from 1965 to 1967 he was artistic director of the record label Club Français du Disque , which was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie du disque in 1967. From 1969 to 1979 he worked as a music critic for Figaro and from 1983 to 1991 as an expert on copyright issues at the Court of Cassation and Court of Appeal of Paris.

Pascal's extensive compositional work includes practically all musical genres from chamber music to instrumental concerts to symphonic works, and from songs to choral music to stage works. The discography of his works includes more than thirty CDs. The musical legacy is in the private archive of Tobias Bröker .
