The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées ( French , German  Theater der Champs-Élysées ) is a theater in Paris . It is not on the Champs-Élysées , but on 15 avenue Montaigne , and caused a sensation at the beginning of the 20th century with its architecture and, above all, its scandal-ridden performances. Today it is still a venue for musical theater and one of the most famous concert halls in the city.

The theater owes its existence to Gabriel Thomas , the financier and founder of the operating company of the Eiffel Tower , as well as the newspaper editor and impresario Gabriel Astruc . An adequate space should be created for contemporary music, the project was able to prevail against the originally negative city administration by purchasing the former Hôtel de Lillers on Avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement .

Auguste Perret built the theater originally designed by Henry van de Velde from 1911 to 1913 . The concrete structure was faced with white marble, atypically for Perret. The front is decorated with bas-reliefs by Emile-Antoine Bourdelle , the Apollo with the Muses represent. Inside there are three halls one above the other: the Grand Théâtre with 2,000 seats, above La Comédie with 655 seats and Le Studio (257 seats), which opened in 1923. Works of art by representatives of the Nabis between Art Nouveau and Art Deco dominate the interior. The dome of the great hall and the gilded sculptures in the proscenium are by Maurice Denis , the paintings in La comédie by Édouard Vuillard , the curtain by Ker-Xavier Roussel .

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées was able to live up to its intention in the first year. The premieres of Ballet Russes under the choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky ( Jeux by Claude Debussy on May 15, 1913 and, to a greater extent, Le sacre du printemps by Igor Stravinsky two weeks later) are considered the beginning of modern ballet.

La Comédie theater reached its peak under the direction of Louis Jouvet from 1922 to 1934.

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is now dedicated to classical music and is home to the Orchester National de France and the Orchester Lamoureux as well as the base of the Vienna Philharmonic in France.

Michel Franck has been director of the theater since 2010 .
