Boniface (* 1181 / 82 in Brussels ; † 19th February 1261 in the monastery La Chambre-Sainte-Marie in Brussels) was from 1231 to 1239 Bishop of Lausanne and is a Catholic saint.
Life
Boniface came from Brussels. He studied from 1199 in Paris , where he later taught Artes Liberales and theology . From 1229 to 1231 he was Cathedral Scholaster in Cologne . After the cathedral chapter of Lausanne could not agree on a candidate within two years, Pope Gregory IX appointed. Boniface in 1231 Bishop of Lausanne. Already at the beginning of his term of office he got into conflicts with the cathedral chapter and the citizens of the city. In 1234 he promoted the establishment of the Dominicans in the city. He was hostile to the policies of Emperor Frederick II . When Bern and Murten joined forces against him, he had to flee to Rome in 1238. In 1239 he renounced his diocese and retired to his home country in the Cistercian monastery of La-Chambre-Sainte-Marie near Brussels, where he was buried after his death in 1261.
Boniface was beatified in 1603 and canonized in 1702 . His feast day is February 19th.
