Franky Gee (born February 19, 1962 in Havana , Cuba ; † October 22, 2005 in Palma , Spain ; actually Francisco Alejandro Gutierrez ) was an American singer and rapper who had some success as the head of the music project Captain Jack .

Life

Franky Gee was born in Cuba but grew up in the United States because his parents emigrated to Miami shortly after he was born . With the desire to become a pilot, he initially studied aircraft construction , but did not finish his studies for financial reasons, among other things. He then switched to the army and served in Germany for some time in the mid-1980s . After his discharge from the army, he stayed in Germany. He was initially an insurance agent and later worked on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange . Although he was successful as a stock exchange trader, the urge to reorientate towards music was stronger and so he founded the dance music project "Westside" with friends and released the single "Oh Well" , which did not make it into the charts.

In 1995 he joined the Captain Jack project , which also included producers Udo Niebergall and Richard Witte and singer Liza da Costa . The image of the project is an allusion to the drill prevalent in the army. Characteristic for Captain Jack was the combination of dance rhythms with rap, which they called Drill Instructor Style . Gee wore a blue and red fantasy uniform when the band performed in public.

Her first single "Captain Jack" was released in 1995; a little later the first album The Mission was released . 1996 was the most popular year for Franky Gee and Captain Jack . Her single Soldier, Soldier was a considerable success, as was her tour of Germany.

At the beginning of 1997 the drill instructor style ebbed away again, the single Together And Forever could no longer build on the success of the previous single.

In 1999, Captain Jack also made a name for himself as a producer by working with the Gipsy Kings in Austin , Texas on the summer hit Get up! produced a cover version of the piece A Banda by Chico Buarque , which is best known in Germany in the version Zwei Orfelsinen im Haar by the French singer France Gall .

On July 7, 2002, Franky Gee suffered a severe stroke and was hospitalized. He was in a coma for three days and the left side of his body was paralyzed as a result. After a week-long stay in hospital, he was discharged fully recovered. During this time, all promotion dates were canceled.

In 2003 Captain Jack made a comeback with the play Viva la Vida , and in 2005 Captain Jack celebrated their tenth stage anniversary. His last single was released shortly before his death under the title Capitano .

On October 17, 2005, Franky Gee collapsed at a meal in Palma de Mallorca at around 11.30 p.m. and was again in a coma on October 19. He died on October 22, 2005 at the age of 43 in a clinic in Palma de Mallorca from the effects of a cerebral haemorrhage . Franky Gee left five children.
