Dominique Probst (born February 19, 1954 in Paris ) is a French composer and drummer.

Life

The son of the actress Gisèle Casadesus studied at the Paris Conservatory , where he won first prize in the field of drums in 1978. In the following year he received the composition prize of the Fondation Lili Boulanger .

Probst has been the solo drummer with the Orchester Colonne since 1973 . He also teaches at the Levallois-Perret Conservatory and was professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1978 to 2000. In 2009 he gave a master class at the University of Boulder / Colorado.

In 1986 the Académie des Beaux-Arts awarded him the Marcel Samuel-Rousseau Composition Prize for his opera Maximilian Kolbe, based on an unpublished book by Eugène Ionesco . The work was made into a film for television and received the Talents Nouveaux Musique Prize from the Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques in 1990 and the Orphée d'Or from the Académie Nationale du Disque Lyrique in 1991 . His second opera, La petite sirène, based on a libretto by Marguerite Yourcenar , premiered in 1993. On a trip through Australia and Vietnam, the opera Motherland was created based on a libretto by Duong Le Quy , which premiered at the Melbourne Festival in 2002 and was awarded the Prix ​​Musique Paul-Louis Weiller of the Institut de France .

In 2004 his Symphonie des Bulles was premiered with 450 international instrumentalists and choristers. For several years his L'Ile de Lumière was on the program of the Orchester Colonne, in 2007 the work was performed by the Orchester Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo and the Orchester de Picardie . In the same year the premiere of his Te Deum took place at the Festival Solstice d'hiver in Alençon under the direction of Martin Moulin .
