Nirad Narayan Mohapatra ( Oriya ନୀରଦ ମହାପାତ୍ର Nīrad Mahāpātra ; born November 12, 1947 in Bhadrak , Orissa ; † February 19, 2015 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian film director , documentary filmmaker and film theorist .

Life

After completing a BA in 1967, Mohapatra began an MA in Political Science at Utkal University in Bhubaneswar , which he dropped out shortly after to devote himself to his passion for cinema. In 1968 he enrolled for a course in film directing at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune , which he graduated with a diploma in 1971. During his studies his understanding of film theory showed . After his return to his home town of Orissa, Mohapatra did not find sufficient opportunities to work in films and he returned to the directing faculty of the Pune Film School as a lecturer. He taught there between 1972 and 1974. His students included Girish Kasaravalli , Jahnu Barua , Saeed Akhtar Mirza , Ketan Mehta , Manmohan Mohapatra and Vidhu Vinod Chopra .

In Bhubaneswar, Mohapatra ran a film club called “Cinexstasy” from 1974 to 1983 and wrote film articles for the Oriya cultural magazine “Mana Phasal”. He also worked as a visiting professor at FTII and Utkal University and as a documentary filmmaker.

In 1983, Nirad Mohapatra was able to realize his first and only feature film Maya Miriga with funds from the National Film Development Corporation . With a minimal budget and amateur actors, he shot this analysis of the disintegration of an extended middle-class family in a small Orissan town in Puri . The film was a great success with critics and was shown at numerous film festivals in Germany and abroad. At the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg he won the “Third World Competition” in 1984 and at the Hawaii International Film Festival he was awarded a special jury prize. In 1985 Mohapatra was on a lecture tour through four US universities.

From 1986 he turned back to documentary film work. He portrayed the Chhau dance in Mayurbhanj , painting in Orissa and the Odissi dance. Mohapatra was a member of film festival juries and advised Indian film institutes ( Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata and Biju Patnaik Film and Television Institute in Cuttack ).

He died of complications from a biopsy operation because of a suspicion of cancer, which had not been proven.
