Jahnu Barua ( Assamese : জাহ্নু বৰুৱা , Jāhnu Baruvā ; born October 17, 1952 in Lakowa , Assam ) is an Indian film director. He is considered to be the most accomplished director in Assamese film .

Life

Barua studied at Gauhati University and the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune , where he obtained a diploma in directing in 1974. He then worked at Indian Space Research Organization and produced children's programs for the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (1975–76) in Ahmedabad .

His feature film debut, Aparoopa (1982), was the first NFDC- funded Assamese film. He plays in the upper class of the colonial tea plantation owners in Assam. Girish Karnad played alongside Suhasini Mulay , who took the title role .

In Papori (1986) and Halodiya Choraye Baodhan Khaye (1987), Barua addressed current political problems in Assam in the early 1980s. Halodiya Choraye Baodhan Khaye is Barua's most famous film to date. It was shown at the Locarno International Film Festival and received a prize from the Ecumenical Jury . His next film, Banani (1989), shows the tribal people's difficulties in combating illegal logging in their forests, as corrupt local politicians have conflicting interests. The cold side of modernization is illustrated by Barua in Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door (1994) using the example of an old ferryman who, by building a bridge, loses the job he had been doing in his family for generations

In 1993 Barua became chairman of the Indian Film Directors' Association.

After the medium-length family film Tora (2004) produced by the Children's Film Society of India , Jahnu Barua made his first long Hindi film in 2005 with Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara - a film drama with Anupam Kher in the leading role and as producer . His current project Har Pal is a commercial love story - also in Hindi - with Isha Koppikar and Preity Zinta in leading roles.

Several of Barua's films have received National Film Awards . In 2015 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan .
