Girish Kasaravalli ( Kannada : ಗಿರೀಶ್ ಕಾಸರವಳ್ಳಿ ; born December 3, 1950 in Kesalur , Karnataka ) is an Indian director of the Kannada films .

Life

Girish Kasaravalli was born in the village of Kesalur, Shimoga District, Malnad Region . The author KV Subbanna , an uncle on his mother's side, aroused his interest in literature and film. After graduating from university in pharmacology in 1971, Kasaravalli studied directing at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune from 1972 to 1975 . His graduation film Avashesh (1975) won a National Film Award for best experimental short. While still a student, Kasaravalli supported TS Nagabharana with the shooting of his 1978 film Grahana . His first own feature- length film Ghattashraddha (1977) was based on a novel by UR Ananthamurthy and is in the tradition of the anti- Brahmanist Navya movement in the Kannada literature and Pattabhi Rama Reddy's Ananthamurthy film adaptation of Samskara (1970).

Kasaravalli continued to focus on literary adaptations that met the tastes of critics, but not that of mainstream audiences. For four of his films - Ghattashraddha , Tabarana Kathe , Thayi Saheba and Dweepa - he received a National Film Award for best film . He also received National Film Awards for Haseena ( Best Film on Family Welfare ) and Gulabi Talkies ( Best Film in Kannada ). Other contributors to his films also won film awards. The International Film Festival Rotterdam dedicated a retrospective to him in 2003.

Girish Kasaravalli was the director of the Adarsh ​​Film Institute in Bangalore . In 1983 he published a Kannada-language anthology on film theory with essays by Sergei Eisenstein , Siegfried Kracauer , André Bazin , Christian Metz , Peter Wollen and other authors.
