Christian Metz (film scholar)

Christian Metz (* 12. December 1931 in Beziers , † 7. September 1993 in Paris ) was a French film theorist and semiotician . He was the founder of linguistic film semiotics in France.

Life

Metz studied classical languages ​​and ancient history at the École Normale Supérieure and received a doctorate in general linguistics from the Sorbonne University . He then worked as a Directeur d'études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He was influenced u. a. through the work of Ferdinand de Saussure , Claude Lévi-Strauss and Roland Barthes .

In 1964, Metz introduced Cinéma: langue ou langage? the film semiotics. He has published numerous books, including the volumes Essais sur la signification au cinéma (1968) and the post-structural work Langage et cinéma (1971) and L'énonciation impersonnelle, ou Le site du film (1991). In 1977 Metz incorporated the psychoanalysis of Sigmund Freud in his seminal work Le signifiant imaginaire: psychanalyse et cinéma . This should have a considerable influence on the so-called "grand theories" of film studies . These were heavily criticized in 1996 in the works by David Bordwell and Noël Carroll .
