Thomas Jefferson Jackson Lake
Thomas Jefferson Jackson See (born February 19, 1866 near Montgomery City , Missouri , † July 4, 1962 in Oakland , California ) was an American astronomer .
See was one of the most famous and controversial astronomers in the United States at the turn of the century . His main professional areas were the discovery and measurement of binary stars as well as the position and size determination of planets and moons . In view of the many double and multiple stars discovered in the 19th century , he used the Kant-Laplace hypothesis in 1893 to explain their formation from a primordial nebula and rotating equilibrium figures. Today's calculation models refute the postulated constrictions from a “pear shape”.
When searching for a hypothetical ninth planet beyond the orbit of Neptune , Thomas See calculated three alleged trans-Neptunes . With very idiosyncratic articles on various current scientific topics, he drew the resentment of many colleagues, but gained great popularity among the public. His tragic creative path began with a promising start to his career and ended largely in oblivion.
In 1897 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
