Yostos ( Ethiop . ዮስቶስ, also Yostos Delba Iyassu , Justus , throne name Tsehay Sagad ፀሓይ ሰገድ, "before whom the sun bows") (* probably before 1690 ; † February 19, 1716 in Gondar ), was one of the highest Ethiopian dignitaries and from 1711 to 1716 Negus Negest ( Emperor ) of Ethiopia .
The reports about his reign are rather sparse. He probably did not come from the then ruling Solomonic dynasty . He held the dignity of Bejirond under the emperors Tekle Haymanot I and Tewoflos . After the death of Tekle Haymanot I, he supported the claim to the throne of his uncle Tewoflos and was raised to the rank of Ras after his accession to the throne and was entrusted with the administration of the provinces of Semien and Tigre . As a result of ongoing unrest and intrigue, fueled by the various faiths at court, Ras Yostos was later removed from his offices and taken prisoner. After the sudden death of the Emperor Tewoflos Ras Yostos came free and was enthroned on October 14, 1711 as the new emperor, as the Ethiopian nobility and the high clergy not to one of the sons of the Emperor I. During his reign, Yostos did not manage to end the clashes and battles of the parties of the heir to the throne. In December 1715, a poison attack was carried out on Emperor Yostos, which resulted in the emperor being paralyzed from then on. He withdrew almost completely from public life and tried to use his son Fasiledes as heir to the throne. On February 19, 1716, Yostos finally died. Allegedly, David, the son of Emperor Iyassus I, strangled the seriously ill Yostos to himself as David III. to ascend the Ethiopian imperial throne.
Yostos had several churches built during his reign, including one in Gondar . He was married and had a son.
