Joachim Otto Leitert (born July 29, 1931 in Dresden , † February 19, 2004 in Cologne ) was a German motorcycle racer who competed in the eight-liter class in the motorcycle world championship .

Career

Joachim Leitert began training as a toolmaker in 1946 . Later he worked at SDAG Wismut as a cutter , excavator driver , locksmith and driver . His work brought him to motorsport through the Society for Sport and Technology (GST). At first he took part in the GST performance test drives. Leitert then met the motorcycle racer Alfred Fleischer and became his helper. In 1956, Leitert built a 125 cc Jawa - ČZ to start in the eight-liter class for ID drivers. A year later he started with an IFA RT 125 . However, only in 1958, as he uses a three-speed rotary valve - MZ was launched, the first successes hired.

In 1959 he was able to purchase an MZ RE 125 and fought with Heinz Rosner for the title of the junior cup in the 125 cc ID class. Both Leitert and Rosner were then allowed to take part in their first foreign races and were promoted to the 125 cc license class for the 1960 season. In 1960, Leitert was allowed to try out a 250 cm³ factory MZ on the Bernau Loop . However, he was denied a works contract, so he continued as a club driver in the eight-liter class. In 1963 and 1964 he was then each GDR runner-up in the 125 cc class (behind Dieter Krumpholz and Friedhelm Kohlar ).

The most successful year for Leitert was 1965, in which he was able to secure the GDR championship title in the 125 cc class ahead of Hartmut Bischoff in the fifth of seven races . He was also allowed to take part in three World Cup races, in which he achieved a third and two fourth places. As a result, he had only one World Championship point less than the best GDR MZ works driver Klaus Enderlein and thus finished 9th in the overall World Championship.

In the following year there were many technical problems with his machine and no success was achieved. Leitert drove his last race in 1967 in Assen, where he suffered an injury to his cervical spine in a serious fall, which ended his motorsport career.

He moved the beginning of the 1980s with his family for political reasons in the BRD . Joachim Leitert died on February 19, 2004 after a serious illness in Cologne.
