Julius Lieban (born February 19, 1857 in Lundenburg , Moravia , † February 1, 1940 in Berlin ) was an Austro-German opera singer .

Life

Lieban was born the son of a chasan in Moravia and learned to play the violin from Gypsies in his youth . Later he attended the conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna , studied singing with Josef Gänsbacher and came to the local theater as a violinist. He then sang at the Stadttheater in Leipzig and at the Komische Oper in Vienna as Buffo . In 1881 he took part in Angelo Neumann's Wagner tour and later sang at the Bayreuth Festival . From 1883 he was a tenor buffo member of the court opera in Berlin ; later he also sang at the newly founded German Opera House in Charlottenburg . In 1908 Lieban was appointed chamber singer . In 1933, when he was over 70, he sang the mime at the State Opera. He was successfully engaged in guest appearances at many major opera stages all over Europe. Most recently he worked as a singing teacher in Berlin. He was married to the soprano Helene Lieban-Globig (born March 31, 1866 in Berlin, † 1919 in Stettin?).

His brothers were the baritone Adalbert Lieban , the bassist Adolf Lieban and the baritone Siegmund Lieban .

Lieban's grave is in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf , where he rests next to his brother Adalbert.
