A crash bar is used to protect a motorcycle from damage in the event of a fall. Furthermore, a crash bar should protect or at least relieve the driver's legs if possible.

Crash bars are usually made of steel and are usually attached symmetrically in pairs. They are attached to the frame or to parts that have a firm, stable connection with the frame. They are screwed or welded for fastening.

Crash bars mostly protect the crankcase and the engine block . This is particularly important for motorcycles with a boxer engine with cylinders perpendicular to the direction of travel, such as the R series from BMW .

Crash bars are usually an optional accessory, as many motorcyclists feel that they affect the look of the motorcycle. For this reason, many of the crash bars offered represent a compromise between safety and appearance.
