action

The hit man Joe carried out an assignment in Prague and murdered a person there. He also kills a young local man who apparently helped him during his time in Prague so as not to leave any witnesses. He travels to Bangkok , where he is supposed to kill four people for ganglord Surat. Then he wants to get out of his illegal trade. In Bangkok he hires the pickpocket Kong, whom he uses as a middleman for his meetings with the gangsters and who meets with a dancer named Aom in a nightclub. Kong and the dancer get closer and closer in the course of their encounters.

Joe's first two contract killings go smoothly - he shoots the first victim in traffic and drowns the second in a hotel pool at night. Originally, he had planned to kill Kong according to his own rules before leaving. But after receiving information from him about the second target, he begins to train Kong. After the second murder, the employers try to track down Joe by chasing Kong. But Kong informs Joe, who then unequivocally warns the gangsters against a further search for him. Joe decides to act as Kong's mentor and pass his deadly skills on to the boy. So Kong helps his mentor Joe in the third contract killing, but not everything goes as planned and the victim is only shot after a boat and motorcycle chase.

In between, Joe meets the deaf and dumb pharmacist Fon, with whom he falls in love and with whom he goes out a couple of times. When he visits her mother, he pretends to be a banker. But when he shoots two street gangsters who want to take his wallet from him in her presence, she turns away from him, terrified and horrified.

His fourth target is to be the Prime Minister of Thailand , whom Kong praises as a politician close to the people. Joe had his rifle ready during a parade when Kong's words made him doubt. Because he hesitates instead of firing the fatal shot, he is discovered by police snipers and put under fire. He barely manages to escape through the panicked crowd. Kong and Aom have since been taken hostage by Surat and Kong is forced to reveal Joe's whereabouts in Bangkok. Joe is now a target of the gangsters himself and is attacked by four killers in his apartment. He can put them out of action with self-made explosive devices and faces the decision to save Kong or leave the country. Joe decides to rescue Kong, so he breaks into the gang's headquarters and frees Kong and Aom after shooting almost all of the gang's members.

Surat flees to his car with three accomplices. Joe sees him and kills the three other gang members, whereupon he sits in the car with the gang leader. When the police arrive at the scene, he decides to kill both himself and Surat with one shot.

Alternative ending

In an alternate ending to the DVD version, Kong helps Joe escape from the police. When the two say goodbye, Kong receives an additional cash bonus and Joe leaves the country on a boat.

Reviews

Jordan Mintzer wrote in Variety magazine on August 28, 2008 that the film adds a Thai touch to the lone hit man subgenre. However, the result is not particularly strong. The directing Brothers Pang merely increased the "decibel strength" of the shootings and the lushness of the plot compared to the original film of the same name from 1999.

According to Björn Becher from the editorial team of Filmstarts , Bangkok Dangerous is “a lame thriller that went down at the box office in the USA and is therefore rightly only available direct-to-DVD in Germany. […] In the remake, the audience is presented with the worn out cliché of the stumbling killer who suddenly discovers love and his conscience. The Pang brothers not only gain nothing new from this old-fashioned topic, they don't even manage to translate it into solid action food. Joe's development is rarely credible. [...] The climax of the miserable character development is Joe's mutation to be a do-gooder. "

The lexicon of the international film judged that Bangkok Dangerous was "a visually very attractive film, played in the main role listlessly, which only marginally rewritten the script without being able to fill the empty spaces with atmosphere."
