Local Government Act 1972

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Local Government Act 1972 was an Act of Parliament in the United Kingdom that reformed the administrative structures in England and Wales on April 1, 1974.

His aim was to introduce a two-tier administrative structure that still exists in large parts of England today. Only the Metropolitan Counties have been replaced by a large number of new Unitary Authorities since 1986 and during the 1990s . In Wales, the administrative system was brought into line with the English one through the formation of counties and districts. In 1996, however, this was reversed and Wales was instead divided into 22 unitary authorities , which in Germany are most comparable to the independent cities (single-level administration).

In Scotland, too, the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 initially introduced a two-tier administrative system. On April 1, 1996, this was replaced by so-called Council Areas, which correspond to the Unitary Authorities in England and Wales.
