Ribble Valley is an administrative district with the status of a borough in the county of Lancashire in England , which is named after the River Ribble . The administrative seat is the city of Clitheroe . Other significant places are Longridge , Ribchester and Whalley .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was formed from the merger of the Municipal Borough Clitheroe, the Urban District Longridge, the Rural District Clitheroe and parts of the Rural Districts Blackburn, Burnley and Preston. The Rural District Bowland was added from the West Riding of Yorkshire .
