Clitheroe (pronunciation: [klɪðəˌɹəʊ] ) is a town and civil parish in the Ribble Valley , Lancashire , England . It is located on the southern edge of the Forest of Bowland with 15,517 inhabitants (as of 2016). As this is the closest town to the UK's geographic center at Wolfhole Crag , Clitheroe can be said to be the most central town in the country.

The city dates back to the 11th century. Its name comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for "rocky ledge". The town developed around Clitheroe Castle , which sits on a rock in the town. The city's oldest surviving document is believed to be from 1283 and refers to rights granted to the city between 1147 and 1177.

The Mearley Brook flows through the city. It unites at the southern end of the city with the Pendleton Brook , which flows into the west of the city running River Ribble in the southwest of the city .

The Waddow Hall is a Scout Center.

Clitheroe includes the prestigious private Catholic school Stonyhurst College .

economy

Clitheroe has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the UK. This is largely due to the settlement of several companies, each providing several hundred jobs, including Ultraframe , Castle Cement , Tarmac , Dugdale Nutrition, and Johnson Matthey .

Castle Cement has been criticized for burning industrial waste in its ovens, which locals believe produces toxic dioxins . Despite verification measures on the part of the company, the residents are still campaigning to end this use.
