Crummock Water is a lake in the Lake District National Park in Northern England . It is 500 to 900 meters wide, four kilometers long and 44 meters deep and is owned by the National Trust .

The lake runs from northwest to southeast and is separated from Buttermere to the southeast by a plain about a kilometer wide. It is believed that Crummock Water and Buttermere once formed a lake and that this land bridge was formed from debris during the last glacial period . A short river called Buttermere Dubs connects both lakes today. The valley is closed in the southeast by Fleetwith Pike , in the northeast lies Grasmoor and in the southwest Mellbreak .

In addition to the connection with the Buttermere above and Lake Loweswater through the Dub Beck , which flows into Park Beck , the Scale Beck forms a significant tributary. In the course of the Scale Beck on the west bank of the lake is the Scale Force waterfall, which is wrongly considered to be the highest waterfall in the Lake District with a drop of over 50 meters.

The outflow to the northwest is formed by the River Cocker , which flows into the River Derwent at Cockermouth , the outflow from Bassenthwaite Lake , to flow into the Irish Sea .

Alfred Wainwright , author of the Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells , said of the landscape at Crummock Water: "No connection between mountains and lake has a closer relationship than here".

In the lake are the Scale Island , the Woodhouse Islands and the Holme Islands .
