Scale Force is a waterfall in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . The waterfall lies in the course of the Scale Beck on the northern flank of a mountain range formed by Starling Dodd and Red Pike above Crummock Water . Scale Force is considered the highest waterfall in the Lake District with a total height of 51.80 m. However, the water of the Scale Beck flows over several steps, the largest of which is 36.60 m high and with a total height of 100 m, the Moss Force waterfall is twice as high as the Scale Force waterfall.

The Lake Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge described Scale Force in letters to Sara Hutchinson in August 1802, emphasizing that the trees surrounding the waterfall, which he described as "proper Waterfall", do not diminish its impression, but on the contrary reinforce it , since this, like the eyes of a mad man, shimmers from under his hair.

The waterfall can be reached from Buttermere .
