Buttermere is a locality and civil parish in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . The civil parish has 127 inhabitants (2001). The place is located on a land bridge between the two lakes Buttermere and Crummock Water , which were once a lake and whose current short river connection is known as Buttermere Dubs .

In the southwest of the village lies the Red Pike and in the northeast of the Wandope and Crag Hill and Robinson . From Buttermere a road leads between Wandope and Crag Hill on the north side and Robinson on the south side over Newlands Pass to Keswick .

The Mill Beck flows through Buttermere and flows northwest of the village into Crummock Water.

A plaque in St James' Church in Buttermere commemorates the author Alfred Wainwright . Wainwright's final resting place at Innominate Tarn on the Haystacks is visible from here.

The Scale Force waterfall above Crummock Water can be reached from Buttermere.

Known residents

Mary Robinson (1778-1837), daughter of the landlord of the Fish Inn in Buttermere, who became known as the Maid of Buttermere and whose story was processed by the Lake Poet William Wordsworth in his poem The Prelude .
