It should be noted that the Bassenthwaite Lake is the only body of water that has the addition of Lake. Larger bodies of water are generally referred to as "mere" or "water" and the smaller ones as "Tarn". Some authors, especially in the media, like to speak of "Lake Windermere" even if it is not welcomed.
There are supposed to be around 1000 lakes of various sizes in the Lake District, this is only a small compilation, the expansion of which is desired.
