The Kentmere Tarn is a lake in the Lake District , Cumbria , England .
The lake is located in the Kentmere Valley south of Kentmere. The River Kent forms its inflow in the north and its outflow in the south.
Dying diatoms caused the lake to silt up more and more and in the 1840s it was decided to drain it completely in order to gain pastureland. The resulting area remained very swampy and so the drainage was stopped and it remained a swamp. In the 1930s it was discovered that the deposits of the diatoms could be used economically as diatomaceous earth and the mining of diatomaceous earth began. In 1971 mining was stopped for economic reasons and the lake was restored in its current form.
