The Red Tarn is a lake in the Lake District , Cumbria , England . The Red Tarn is located on the eastern flank of the Helvellyn within a small valley basin, which is called Corrie in this area . The Striding Edge rises on the east and south side of the lake, a ridge that connects Helvellyn and Nethermost Pike and is one of the well-known ascent routes on the Helvellyn. In the north of the lake is the Catstye Cam .
The Red Tarn is a natural lake, which was walled in in 1840 to increase its capacity and use the water for a lead mine in the valley below. Today only remnants of this wall can be seen and the lake has returned to its natural water level.
The Red Tarn has no discernible tributary, but the Red Tarn Beck , which flows into the Glenridding Beck , forms its drain on its east side.
