The Helton Tarn is a lake in the Lake District , Cumbria , England .
To the north of Witherslack , the Helton Tarn is formed by the River Winster .
It is said that the first boat made of iron sank in the lake. In the 18th century, Lindale's John Wilkinson offered to smelt iron ore from the Furness Fells. He wanted to transport the ore in iron boats, for which he made various models as an experiment. However, no remains of these attempts have been found.
