Discharge from the Kentmere Reservoir |
The Kentmere Reservoir is a reservoir in the Lake District in Cumbria , England . The lake lies on the south slope of High Street and is fed by the water of the River Kent that emerges above it. Further tributaries come from the west side of the Harter Fell .
history
The reservoir was built between 1845 and 1848 because the factory owners on the River Kent wanted to ensure a constant water supply to power their machines. The building was approved by parliament in 1845 at the request of the manufacturers.
location
The reservoir is surrounded and easily visible from the mountains of the so-called Kentmere Horseshoe (Kentmere Horseshoe), which is formed from Yoke , Froswick , Ill Bell , High Street, Thornthwaite Crag , Harter Fell, Mardale Ill Bell and Kentmere Pike .
The River Kent flows into the lake at the northern end and leaves it in the middle of the dam at its southern end.
