Ennerdale Water is the westernmost lake in Northern England's Lake District National Park . It is between 600 and 1500 meters wide, four kilometers long and 45 meters deep.

geography

The lake is located in the valley of the same name, which, like the other lakes in the Lake District, was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age and is surrounded to the north, east and south by some of the highest and most famous mountains in the region: Great Gable, High Stile, Steeple and Pillar.

At the western end of the lake is the village of Ennerdale Bridge. With a small grocery store, two pubs and a few houses it is typical of this area of Cumbria . Once a year, the Ennerdale Show takes place here in a week in August , an agricultural exhibition with a cattle, arts and crafts market.

use

In 1902 the natural dam at the western end of the lake was artificially raised in order to be able to use the lake as a drinking water reservoir for the port city of Whitehaven , ten kilometers away . Plans in the 1960s and 1980s to raise the water level again by more than a meter were not implemented.

In the 1930s, the north and east of the lake on the valley slopes, a large, atypical for the region of timber was spruce - monoculture planted. The south bank is lined with natural deciduous forest.

Tourism and ecology

Ennerdale Water is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers. However, it is not as touristically developed as other places in this region and, due to the lack of commercial gastronomy, also less attractive. For example, the path along the south side of Ennerdale Water has a small climbing area at Angler's Crag and is not suitable for leisurely walks. There is also no public road into the valley. Therefore, the landscape around the lake, apart from the commercial forest, has largely been able to retain its original character.

In 2003 the UK Forestry Agency, the National Trust and United Utilities plc, as owners of the lake and valley, merged to form the Wild Ennerdale Partnership “to enable Ennerdale to develop as a natural valley for the benefit of those who rely on a natural process leave to change landscape and ecology ”.

Two youth hostels offer accommodation for hikers: the Ennerdale youth hostel east of the upper end of Ennerdale Water and the small Black Sail Hut at the upper end of the entire valley.

Winter golden chicken

In the region around Ennerdale Water you can find the smallest bird in Europe, the golden cockerel . In addition, there is a typical example of glacial relic fauna from the order of the hover shrimp , the relic shrimp ( Mysis relicta ), which only occurs in particularly clean and unpolluted waters and is mainly found in deep clear water lakes in Scandinavia and North America.

Ennerdale Water in the cinema

The final scenes of the film 28 Days Later by Danny Boyle were shot in Ennerdale and show shots of the lake and the surrounding landscape.
