The River Ehen is a river in Cumbria , England . The marriage arises as the outflow of Ennerdale Water , the westernmost lake in the Lake District National Park at its western end. The river initially flows westwards until it turns south between Cleator Moor and Cleator . To the west of Beckermet , the River Ehen reaches the coast of the Irish Sea , but does not flow into the sea, but continues its course in a south-southeast direction. The river is only separated by a narrow strip of land on which the Cumbrian Coast Line of the railway runs. At the Sellafield nuclear facility , the River Ehen flows into the Irish Sea together with the River Calder and the Newmill Beck .
The River Ehen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest from its origin on Ennerdale Water to the mouth of the River Keekle . This section of the river is where most of England's river pearl mussels live . It is the third largest colony in the UK and the only one that is still growing.
