The Floutern Tarn is a lake in the Lake District , Cumbria , England .
The Floutern Tarn is north of the Great Bourne and south of the Hen Comb . The lake has no recognizable tributary and an unnamed drain on its east side, which flows into the Mosedale Beck .
The remains of the Red Gill Mine , where iron ore was mined, can be seen near its drain . A rail link was to be laid to the mine that would meet a railroad line at Cogra Moss . A machine that would pull the wagons up the mountain was to be permanently installed on the Floutern Tarn. After only six years, the mine was closed in 1877 as too costly to operate and the rail connection was not implemented.
