final

Date: October 21, 1964, 2 p.m.

Weather conditions: rain, approx. 17–19 ° C, 78–83% humidity

The clear favorite was the Soviet jumper Valeri Brumel, world record holder , silver medalist from Rome in 1960 and European champion from 1962 . The challenger was John Thomas from the USA, who had competed as a favorite in Rome, but had 'only' won bronze there. His performances in the US Olympic eliminations were not particularly remarkable, but the conditions there had been poor.

The final was tight and high class. When the bar was set at 2.09 m, ten jumpers were still in the ranking. At the next height - 2.12 m - the field was halved. At 2.14 m the US jumper John Rambo took the lead, but was replaced by Brumel due to the rule of failure at 2.16 m. Brumel, Rambo and Thomas were the last remaining participants, they had all jumped 2.16 m. Rambo failed at the height of 2.18 m, which was taken by Brumel and Thomas in the first attempt. That was a new Olympic record . Both remaining jumpers, however, tore the height of 2.20 m three times. The lower number of failed attempts - there were two - brought Valeri Brumel the Olympic victory, John Thomas remained silver with four failed attempts and John Rambo won the bronze medal ahead of Stig Pettersson from Sweden and the 1960 Olympic champion Robert Schawlakadze from the USSR, both of whom Had skipped 14 m.
