Barrow Offshore Wind Farm is one of DONG Energy -operated offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea .

General

The wind farm is located about 7 km southwest of Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness and was built in a water depth of 15 to 20 meters. The installed capacity is 90  MW . An annual electricity yield of 305  GWh is expected, which corresponds to an average output of around 35 MW with which 65,000 British households can be supplied. The degree of utilization of the systems is around 39%.

There are three other offshore wind farms near Barrow: Ormonde , Walney and West of Duddon Sands .

history

The first plans for the offshore wind farm were carried out by Warwick Energy Limited , and the project was later taken over by Dong Energy . After the planning was completed in 2003, the contracts required for the construction were handed over to a consortium of companies led by Vestas in 2004. Construction of the transformer platform began in April 2005 . The installation of the wind turbines took place after the monopiles had been erected from November 2005 onwards. From March 2006, the turbines were gradually connected to the grid; the official opening of the wind farm took place on September 25, 2006.

technology

For insert 30 come  wind turbines of the type Vestas V90-3MW with a rotor diameter of 90 m and a hub height of 75 m, on the monopile were constructed. The wind farm consists of four rows of wind turbines 750 m apart, two rows of seven and two of eight wind turbines. The distance from turbine to turbine within the rows is 500 m.

The electricity generated is fed into the transformer station in Heysham , to which the wind farm's own transformer platform is connected via a submarine cable . The Ormonde offshore wind farm also feeds into the same substation . In this, the voltage is stepped up from 33  kV (voltage level of the wind turbines) to 132 kV.
