Walney Island or Isle of Walney is located in the Irish Sea west of the Furness Peninsula and is the eighth largest island off the coast of England .

Until 1974 the island and the peninsula were a separate part of the county of Lancashire . The island is now part of Cumbria and is part of the town of Barrow-in-Furness , with which it has been connected by a bridge since 1908.

Walney Island is approximately 17.5 km long and at no point is it wider than 1.6 km. Its area is 12.99 km². About 13,000 people live on Walney in four locations: Biggar , North Scale , North Walney , Vickerstown.

The island was originally used to house Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering workers ; Part of the island still bears the name Vickerstown today.

Walney has a golf course, an outdoor children's playground and two animal protection zones. Sites of Special Scientific Interest can be found all over the island . The natterjack toads ( Bufo calamita ) and many bird species that occur there are of zoological importance .

At the northern end of the island is a small airfield, the base of the Lakes Gliding Club .

The island is the namesake for the offshore wind farm Walney, which was built some distance away . The Ormonde , Barrow and West of Duddon Sands offshore wind farms are also nearby .

The north end of the island borders the mouth of the River Duddon and is part of the River Duddon Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest . The island is one of the few barrier islands in Great Britain. The island is special because it was created by glacial activity, not by the deposition of water. The island is therefore important both on its own and as an object of comparison to other islands of this type.

The southern end of the island and the adjacent islands of Foulney Island , Piel Island, and Roa Island are part of the South Walney and Piel Channel Flats Site of Special Scientific Interest .
