The River Eden is a 145 km long river in north west England .
It rises south of the High Seat in the Yorkshire Dales in the far east of Cumbria on the North Yorkshire border . The Eden originates as Red Gill and then changes its name to Hell Gill Beck . Under this name, it flows west until it reaches the Settle – Carlisle railway near the Ais Gill Summit . The river then flows north through Cumbria under the name River Eden until it turns west at Low Crosby east of Carlisle and flows through Carlisle. West of the city it changes its course again in a northerly direction and flows into the Irish Sea in the Solway Firth after it has crossed Hadrian's Wall northwest of Carlisle .
